Aldershot Town Football Club are deeply saddened to have learnt of the passing of popular former Aldershot FC player Alex McGregor.
Born in Glasgow on 12 November 1950 Alex joined Aldershot during the early part of the 1976/77 season making his debut in a 2-0 victory v Stockport County in a Football League Division 4 encounter in front of 5,543 fans.
It was the first of exactly 200 appearances for the Shots during his six years at the club scoring 21 goals. Alex’s silky skills as a winger saw him make an instant impact at the club leading to eventually become a cult hero.
During the 1977/78 season Aldershot were unbeaten at home for the only time in the clubs 65 year history. Alex made 39 appearances netting 3 goals that season as Tommy McAnearney’s side finished 5th in Division 4 two points behind promoted fourth placed Brentford.
The following campaign was one of legendary proportions as Aldershot again finished fifth but also reached the Fifth Round of the FA Cup before making an exit after a replay.
Alex was an ever present in the famous cup run and that saw victories versus Weymouth, Barking, Sheffield United and Swindon Town before a famous night at the Recreation Ground in February 1979 when just short of 12,000 fans packed the Recreation Ground to see Shrewsbury Town level in injury time in a 2-2 draw after John Dungworth had put the Shots in the lead a minute before.
Alex started 49 matches during an epic season. He also scored for the Shots in the FA Cup Third Round defeat at Everton in 1979/80.
Alex also played for Ayr United, Hibernian and Shrewsbury Town whilst featured for Farnborough Town after he left Aldershot in 1982.
We send our deepest sympathies to Alex’s family at such a difficult time and we will be holding a minute’s applause before our Vanarama National League game at the EBB Stadium against Dorking Wanderers tomorrow to honour Alex’s memory.
